Year 4 Overview 2021 – 22

We use our CLIC values to help us to learn to the best of our ability. We believe that every child has the right-

C– to be a confident communicator

L– to learn

I– to improve their health

C– to be part of a community

At Netley Abbey Junior School, these ideas underpin all of our learning.

If you would like any further information about our curriculum, please feel free to talk to our class teachers in the first instance who should be able to answer any queries. After talking to the class teacher, if there are any further enquires, they can be directed toward our head teacher.

Parents’ Guide to Grammar

In the link below you will find a user friendly guide to the different grammar terminology your child will be familiar with. Although it is split into year groups, you may need to look at the year group before for skills originally introduced in previous years. We hope that this is a helpful tool for supporting your child with their homework.

Autumn Term Update:

Autumn 1

Year 4 have settled well back into school life and shown fantastic learning behaviours!

In English, we have been looking at books written by the author Angela McAllister called Leon and the place between and Winter’s child.

Leon And The Place Between is an exciting book which is about a boy who visits a magic show with his siblings. He volunteers himself to go into the magic box and it is here that he finds himself in the place between where all magic things are. Year 4 wrote some brilliant setting descriptions of the magic tent and the magic show.

In Maths, we have been practising some number skills by using practical resources. We have also been looking further into reasoning questions and trying to make our answers more detailed.

In DT, we really loved making marble mazes made from wood. We have learnt how to use saws safely and also made sure that the marble would fit around the maze. We made these circus-themed to match our book: Leon And The Place Between.

Autumn 2

This half term, Year 4 have been busy!

In English, we have been focusing on two books called The Tin Forest and The Great Kapok Tree. We have enjoyed looking at these two books because they have a focus on the environment and looking after what we have. Using The Tin Forest, we wrote a description of the forgotten setting and then wrote a description of the new environment. Using The Great Kapok Tree, we wrote a non-fiction leaflet about the Amazon rainforest.

We have also enjoyed our Geography unit where we have been learning about earthquakes and volcanoes. We really enjoyed learning about tectonic plates, how earthquakes occur and volcanoes erupt.

This unit also linked with our Art, where we have been busy using different types of media to create pictures of volcanoes. We have used straws to blow paint onto our pencil drawings.

We then used Papier Mache to create volcano that we then painted. Finally, we erupted the volcanoes using vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and red food colouring which we found very exciting!

We finished this term by performing a Christmas poem and some songs to our parents. A perfect way to end for the Christmas break.
